One of the IT sector fundamental pillars, on which, to a greater or lesser extent, the majority of Spanish companies in all business sectors rely on the generation, analysis and management of data. But how is it possible to perform these actions quickly, safely, simultaneously and effectively? The answer is cloud computing. This new way of doing computer science implies a paradigm shift that allows us to take advantage of the capabilities of immense data process centers that provide access to information and analysis. Cloud computing brings the capabilities of our computers and mobile phones to infinity.
50% of the expenditure made in 2019 by companies in the IT sector falls on cloud-related services. Forecasts show that, in three years, the cloud industry will have developed three times faster than the generic set of all information technologies, growing 25% annually more than electronic commerce. To get an idea of what the cloud currently means, let's take the global advertising market as a reference. This market covers about 50,000 million dollars annually, while the potential cloud market generates between one billion and four billion dollars a year. All information technology is going to move to this model of storage and data management, representing the current cloud only 5% of what will become the market.
Cloud computing has an infinite computing capacity and introduces many innovative concepts perfectly applicable in companies of any size. The question is whether Spanish companies are taking into account the great trends of cloud computing and the advantages offered by this technology.
First, the capabilities offered by cloud technology in terms of data storage, management and availability make companies consider cloud migration as a short-term necessity. Not adopting this technology in the next few years can mean the obsolescence of any company.
In addition, the cloud allows the reduction of consumption. More than 70% of Spanish companies suffer from oversized costs in everything related to the storage of their data. The cloud allows storage cost to be optimized and provides data availability immediately. In addition, cloud technology is totally ecological: the daily consumption of its activity compared to the amount of data it stores makes it considered a Green IT technology.
Another great benefit is profitability. The world of cloud computing is considered one of the most profitable market niches, which is why it is currently the playing field of multinationals as important as Amazon, Microsoft, Google, Alibaba and Huawei. The investment made by each of these companies in cloud technology accounts for more than 40% of its annual budget and the investment is expected to increase 25% each year compared to the previous year.
The proliferation of SaaS technology is a sign of another advantage. SaaS platforms are based on a model in which the cloud service provider company offers maintenance, support and operation as a whole. The customer uses the system hosted by the company, which is responsible for maintaining customer information in their systems and providing the necessary resources to exploit that information. SaaS platforms avoid unnecessary maintenance costs and, when contracted as a service, provide great flexibility. In addition, they allow users to connect simultaneously to other applications hosted in the cloud through a simple Internet connection.
Another strength is the immediate availability: the ease of the cloud in the deployment of resources is not outside the cloud. At the moment when a company needs storage, it can have an instant cloud service. This immediacy is also applicable to the increase or reduction of contracted resources.
To all these advantages, it should be added that cloud services respond to a pay-per-use model with a full scalability character. This allows to increase the capacity of the requested resources or their size without compromising their operation and quality. In addition to assuming considerable cost savings, it also provides an optimization of physical space, since in order to benefit from cloud technology it is not necessary to host any server in a space reserved for it within each company.
Knowing the tremendous potential of migration to the cloud, no company should let their business fall behind or suffer an outdated service offered.
